Editorial Review:

Item Description:
Rarely does a mom or dad make it through a day without thinking they could use an extra set of hands. So First Years designed the next best thing -- a safety gate that doesn't require any hands at all! But even though it's simple for an adult to just press on the pedal and walk through, it's too difficult for a baby. The gate fits all standard doorways 29' to 34' wide, and, with use of the Gate Extension Kit (sold separately) will also fit other openings up to 44' wide. The pressure-mounted design won't damage walls or doorways. An audible click lets you know the gate has locked.

Amazon.com Item Description:
Because of its simple 'knee-knocker' mechanism, this Hands Free Gate can do exactly what the name implies: be opened without having to use your hands. Any parent occupied with little ones and all of their necessities will quickly recognize this as a huge benefit. To operate, simply press on the pedal with your toes and then bump the knee plate with your knee. Closing is just a nudge in the opposite direction; you will hear a click when the latch has caught, offering peace of mind that it’s secure again.

foot pedal
The convenient foot pedal is easy for adults, but difficult for children, to open.
The pedal, knee plate, and hinges are designed so the gate can swing open from either direction. Even smarter is that the gate is purposely designed as easy-to-open for an adult, yet difficult for children. The gate’s vertical bars curb curious toddlers from trying to climb over, are spaced to help prevent painful accidents, and provide ample visibility through to the other side.

pressure mount
Adjustable pressure mounts don’t require screws and won’t mark up your walls.
Able to fit in standard doorframes (29' to 34' wide), the all-metal safety gate is a pressure-mount device. Just twist the adjustable bolts at each of the four corners to get a proper, secure fit in your doorways. (If you have wider than standard doors, The First Years sells extension kits separately that can accommodate up to 44-inch wide openings.) It should be noted that this safety gate can be a little unsteady when used at the outer limits of its range, so you may want to consider an extension kit even if using in a standard doorway.

Before you buy, there are two things to be aware of. One, the actual opening for parents, kids, and/or pets to walk through is only about 18 inches wide. Two, if you want to use this in a doorway and be able to close the door, the foot pedal sticks out too far to allow this. For use with children up to 24 months.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Best gate I've ever owned ...
I've used a bunch of different baby gates over the years to contain both toddlers and dogs. This Hands Free gate is by far the best I've ever owned. It is very sturdy, stays in place, and the foot latch works easily. I would suggest purchasing at least one gate extension with this gate. Without an extension the gate will only fit a standard bedroom door. It will not fit in a hallway without at least one extension. Save yourself some shipping by ordering the gate and the extension at the same time.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Love this gate! ...
We bought this for our daughters playroom, bottom of stairs, and for another room in the house. This gate is a great buy; very sturdy.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Super Sturdy Gate for Kids and Pets ...
I had initially purchased this gate about 6 years ago to block off my back door from my 90lbs. yellow lab. This gate lasted not only through the wear and tear of the outdoor elements, but the pouncing and jumping of my dog (especially during bad weather). So, when it came time to buy a gate for my toddlers this was the gate of choice. I do like the new ramp that was added to prevent tripping over the threshold. I wish they made one for large door openings. :)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * I like it a lot ...
This gate is very good. I like that it's hands free. It's very sturdy, and as much as my child tries to get out, she can't. I did have to by the extension. It's very easy to set up. The only problem I found was securing the gett to the walls. The feet that secured it to the wall interfered with the molding so I had to raise the gate a little bit.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Great gate, just bought my 3rd! ...
It's easy to install and operate. You push down the pedal and can open the gate with your knee hands free if you want (a total bonus). I do agree that the opening is a bit narrow, but well worth the trade off to have an easy to install, user-friendly option. It's pressure mounted, but locks in solid and secure. Very sturdy and worth the money.

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
